NEWS ALERT – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 04/26/2021

Mayer Fire District Joins Dewey-Humboldt Firewise with their “Don’t Get Burned” Wildfire Safety Event

Working hard to prevent a tragedy and prepare us all to live with the possibility

Yavapai County, AZ: Today, Mayer Fire District is announcing their participation in Dewey-Humboldt (DH) Firewise’s 1st annual “Don’t Get Burned” Wildfire Safety Event to be held May 22, 2021 from 11am-1pm at Mortimer Farms. The free event will be a fantastic opportunity for all residents to gain an understanding of the potential of wildfires in our environment, how to prevent one, and how to prepare for the very real possibility. We will be joined with an excellent complement of other fire-related organizations and local businesses to provide interested folks a one-stop location for learning what they can do to be prepared. To entice the kids of all ages, conditions permitting, an ambulance, 4 fire engines and their crews, and Smokey Bear will be on hand. With this year’s predicted potential for an awful wildfire season, this couldn’t come at a better time and we urge everyone to come talk to the experts and learn what they should know about our part of the county’s only real, probable natural disaster – wildfire.

In order to get our youth involved, DH firewise is supplementing the event with a “Don’t Get Burned” Wildfire Safety Poster Contest. All Yavapai County School District schools have been invited to have their K-12 scholars create a poster that uses the students’ creativity to raise awareness of the dangers, prevention methods, sources for emergency information and first responders, and evacuation routes. This ongoing contest, which is open to ALL K-12 students, will close on May 5th with judging for the 12 winning posters happening on May 7th.  During the “Don’t Get Burned” Event on May 12th, each of the winners and their contributing classroom teachers will receive $100 for their prize-winning efforts, and those 12 posters will be used to create a year of wildfire reminders within an available calendar. Information related to the contest can be found at https://www.d-hfw.com/contest.

As of now, joining Mayer Fire District will be a great list of fire-related organizations and businesses, assisted by several generous supporters. To date, the list includes:

Most residents aren’t aware of the urgent, looming wildfire dangers, prevention steps, evacuation routes, and where to get the latest info. We’re excited to support DH Firewise, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, all volunteer organization, in getting out this incredibly important message to our community and anticipate that the knowledge it will bring to concerned residents will make us all that much safer.
