Goodwin Fire

Location: Bradshaw Ranger District of Prescott National Forest; 14 miles south of Prescott, AZ (T12N R1W, S28)

Firefighters made excellent progress overnight burning out an area near the northwest corner of Big Bug Mesa, east of Breezy Pines. The burnout operation is expected to be complete today. Additional fire retardant has been applied on this section of the fire to help reinforce the perimeter.
Patrolling, mopup and fireline rehabilitation continues to take place along the 62 miles of fire perimeter. Patrol flights yesterday saw little smoke coming from the southern and eastern portions of the fire. However, smoke could be seen from burning interior islands of vegetation and the burnout operation in the northwest. The public is reminded that smoke seen coming from interior portions of the fire is not a cause of concern at this time. Some ash devils were noticed yesterday and firefighters remain vigilant to ensure embers are not carried across firelines.
Winds are expected to be higher today with gusts from the southwest possibly reaching 25-30 mph.
Evacuation information: Although some evacuations have been lifted and roads reopened, property owners are urged to remain vigilant and monitor fire news. There is still active fire behavior, particularly in the northern portion of the fire, and conditions can change easily if impacted by high wind events.
Yesterday, evacuation orders were lifted for the following communities/areas: Blue Hills (power has been restored), Upper Blue Hills (power has been restored), Dewey/Humboldt all areas west of SR 69 south to mile post 280. (west Poland Junction remains under evacuation)
These communities remain under mandatory evacuation: SR 69 – west side from Grapevine Road north to Milepost 280, Poland Junction- west side, Pine Flat, Breezy Pines, Walker, Potato Patch, Mount Union, Mountain Pine Acres.
Please note: The Blue Hills/Upper Blue Hills area has fire suppression sprinklers that were installed by firefighters in various portions of the community. Please keep these areas clear and allow fire officials access to do their work.

GOODWIN FIRE UPDATE

Summary: The Goodwin Fire continues to burn in very rugged terrain to the south and west of the junction with Senator Highway (FR 52) and County Road 177. Fire crews have been working to keep the fire south of County Road 177, the Mayer-Goodwin Road, and away from the homes and communities to the north. So far they have been successful as the fire has been burning mostly eastward toward the 2015 SA Hill Fire scar. Yesterday the fire burned up and over Brady Butte.
Many factors contribute to the fire’s behavior including temperatures; humidity; vegetation type, density, and moisture content; slope and aspect, wind direction and speed, and terrain. Fire weather is predicted to be near critical today, with low humidity, high temperatures, and breezy conditions. The fire is burning in thick, dry, and decadent chaparral and ponderosa pine in very rugged terrain with little access, which makes conditions hazardous for firefighters. Because firefighter and public safety is the number one objective, firefighters are being directed to not put themselves in situations where the risks are high and probability of success is low. The consistent message from leaders to firefighters is “Nothing is worth you getting hurt”. Closures: A Closure Order for the incident is in effect to provide for the safety of firefighters and the public. Pre-Evacuations: The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office shared the following message with residents of Breezy Pines: “We are currently working with Goodwin Fire officials. There are no evacuations in place at this time in Breezy Pines, but please be prepared to evacuate if needed. Shelter is located at the Mayer High School. For information please call 928-442-5103, 7am – 7pm”.
Structure Damage: Goodwin Fire managers and cooperators have been receiving inquiries regarding structures damaged or destroyed during the first day of Goodwin Fire. It was reported that structures have been destroyed and the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office personnel are working with fire officials to determine the extent of damaged structures. However, this can only be accomplished when it is safe for deputies to enter, complete an accurate assessment, and determine ownership. Efforts to expedite the release of such information is ongoing. In the meantime, the patience of those residents who have been evacuated is greatly appreciated.

This is why it is vital that you register all your phone numbers directly to assure contact in an emergency. Summary: The Goodwin Fire is burning in chaparral and ponderosa pine; south and west of the junction at Senator Highway (FR 52) and County Road 177. Pierson’s Type 1 Incident Management Team has arrived and taken command of the fire on Monday, June 26 at 6:00 am. Fire crews are currently assessing the feasibility of protecting structures and private property in the communities of Pine Flat and Breezy Pines. Fire crews are also working on establishing fire lines using roads and natural features to slow the fire’s progression.

Unseasonably hot and dry weather is creating extreme conditions that are resulting in erratic fire behavior.

CORDES LAKES WATER EMERGENCY

MORNING UPDATE…
Cordes Lakes Water remains in a Stage 3 Water Curtailment. Customers are asked to employ water conservation measures to reduce their daily consumption by approximately 50%. All outside watering should be eliminated and indoor water conservation techniques should be employed whenever possible.
Cordes Lakes water system operated normally yesterday.
Due to adequate water storage levels, the planned system-wide shut down scheduled for Sunday night was cancelled.
Based on 6:30 a.m. water storage tank levels, water system storage decreased from 67% of capacity yesterday to 54% of capacity at 6:30 a.m. today.
Average water storage capacity for yesterday was 57%.
STATEMENT
Water conservation by customers, water hauling and nightly planned system-wide shutdowns through last Friday, allowed the Cordes Lakes water system began the weekend at 79% of storage capacity. Based on the significantly improved level of storage, Cordes Lakes water system cancelled the planned system-wide shut down scheduled for Saturday and Sunday nights.
Storage remains adequate at 57% of capacity this morning, but water demand continues to exceed water supply available from the wells. Therefore, storage levels are expected to continue to decline on Monday. In order to prevent water storage from dropping below acceptable levels, Cordes Lakes Water is tentatively planning a shortened 12 midnight to 3:00 a.m. system-wide shut down tonight. The need for a shut down will be reevaluated throughout the day and implemented only if necessary.
Through Tuesday, daily high temperatures are forecasted to remain over 100 degrees. Continued water conservation and storage recovery is needed to fully stabilize the system.
Cordes Lakes remains in a Stage 3 Water Curtailment and is asking its customers to conserve water to allow for continued water system recovery. Customers are asked to voluntarily employ water conservation measures to reduce their daily consumption by approximately 50%. All outside watering should be eliminated, except livestock, and indoor water conservation techniques should be employed whenever possible.
Cordes Lakes water system will consider a system-wide shut down each night until the system recovers and daily demand is below available water supply. The need for a system-wide shut down and the specific duration of the shut down is reevaluated each day. If water is off between 11:00 pm and 3:30 am, it is due to the system-wide shut down.
For those customers that need it, a limited supply of bottled water is available at Mayer Fire Station in Cordes Lakes. Please bring a driver’s license showing a Cordes Lakes address.

CORDES LAKES WATER EMERGENCY
Due to the extreme heat, the water demand in the Cordes Lakes Water System has increased above normal levels. All of the tanks, equipment and wells are operating, but the system has not been able to keep up with demand.
Cordes Lakes has issued a Stage 3 Water Curtailment and is asking its customers to conserve water to allow the water system to recover. Customers are asked to voluntarily employ water conservation measures to reduce their daily c…onsumption by approximately 50%. Cordes Lakes customers are cooperating and the system has begun to recover. However, more recovery is needed.
In addition to asking customers to conserve, Cordes Lakes is trucking water from Prescott Valley to fill tanks and supplement the water supply. Cordes Lakes is also implementing a planned system-wide shut down between 11:00pm to 3:00am each night until the system recovers. The need for a system shut-down is reevaluated each day. If water is off between 11:00 pm and 3:30 am, it is due to the system-wide shut down.
Cordes Lakes apologizes for this inconvenience and would like to assure its customers that it is working to increase the water supply both in the short-term and long-term.

Mayer Fire crews were dispatched for a vehicle fire at I-17 and Badger Springs Rd. Upon arrival, crews faced a fully involved vehicle fire that spread into 5 acres of wildland and quickly spread to over 160 acres. Multiple agencies including air resources assisted in the firefight. The fire as of 6/2/2017 is fully contained.
